Group vs. Private: What Helps Irish Dancers Rise
At Vanshaw Academy of Irish Dance (VAID), we build dancers with a smart mix of group classes, Teams/Technique, and targeted privates—so skills stick on the studio floor and on stage. Here’s how each piece helps your dancer rise.
Why Group Classes = Your Foundation
Group is where weekly progress stacks up.
- Real-world timing & spacing. Lines, diagonals, and “traffic flow” you need for reels, jigs, slip jigs, treble jigs, and hornpipes.
- Rhythm that sticks. Counting in, dancing in time with the music, matching trebles/hard-shoe accents with the room.
- More reps = cleaner steps. Mileage on turnout, cross, lift, toe height, carriage.
- Confidence + community. Progress is easier (and more fun) with your VAID crew behind you, cheering you on!

Teams/Technique
This is the bridge between “I know the steps” and “I own the stage.”
- 🔁 Focused technique training to reinforce core skills
- ⚡ Faster material retention and more consistent execution across soft & hard shoe
- 🤝 Team-style choreography that builds confidence, counts, and true teamwork (hello, clean lines)
- 🛡️ Injury prevention through strength + mobility blocks—ideal if your dancer tends to roll ankles or feel knee niggles
When Private Lessons Make the Difference
Privates don’t replace class—they supercharge it.
- 🎯 Targeted fixes: turnout, cross, lift, rock timing, back-clicks, toe height, carriage
- 🎤 Event prep: feis run-throughs, stamina sets, entrances/exits, presentation
- ⏱️ Pacing: catch-up after time off or accelerate for level progression/new choreography
- 🧠 Confidence reps: a quiet space to ask questions and iron out nerves
- ♻️ New Choreography: Learn and work on new steps without distraction
The VAID Blend (What We Recommend)
Think group for breadth, private for precision, with Teams/Technique to lock it all in.
- In-season rhythm: Weekly group + Teams/Technique, plus a private every 4–6 weeks for tune-ups and updated drills.
- New choreo / level jump: Short 30-min privates to learn/lock steps, then 45–60 min sessions to refine.
Quick FAQ
Do I need Private Lessons if my dancer doesn’t compete?
Private lessons can help a dancer build confidence with less distraction. Focusing on dances that need extra help or learning new choreography in a less busy and loud environment.
Is Teams/Technique worth it if my dancer competes solo?
Absolutely. Better counts, shapes, and awareness paired with learning to dance on stage with and against others, and injury prevention.
How big are classes?
We cap and structure classes so feedback stays personal—but you still get the peer energy that accelerates learning.
Bottom Line
- Group = foundation (reps, rhythm, community)
- Teams/Technique = consistency & confidence (clean counts, clean lines)
- Privates = precision & new steps (the little fixes that move placements, and focused time learning new choreography)
