What is the Homeschool Irish Dance Program?
Our Homeschool Irish Dance Program is an 8-week daytime session designed specifically for homeschool families. Dancers will be introduced to Irish dance in a fun, active and welcoming environment while developing coordination, rhythm, confidence and new skills.
Does my child need previous dance experience?
Not at all! Our homeschool sessions are beginner-friendly and no previous dance or Irish dance experience is required.
Do we need to be Irish?
No! Irish dance is for everyone. Dancers do not need to have Irish heritage or any previous knowledge of Irish culture to participate.
What will dancers learn during the 8 weeks?
Dancers will learn the foundations of Irish dance, including basic movements, footwork, rhythm and beginner dances. Classes also introduce dancers to Irish dance music and the traditions behind this unique style of dance.
Throughout the session, dancers will work on coordination, balance, musicality, fitness and confidence while learning alongside other homeschool students.
Is this considered physical activity or enrichment?
Absolutely. Irish dance is an active form of dance that develops cardiovascular fitness, coordination, balance, strength and body awareness.
It also incorporates music, rhythm and Irish cultural traditions, making it a great addition to a homeschool family’s physical education or enrichment activities.
What ages can participate?
Our homeschool programming is designed for children ages 5+. Classes may include a range of ages, with activities and instruction adapted to suit the dancers participating in each session.
What does my child need to wear?
No special dancewear is required to get started. Dancers should wear comfortable clothing that allows them to move easily.
Shoes: Dancers can use ballet or jazz shoes, or Irish soft shoes if desired.
Do I need to purchase costumes or other equipment?
No. Families do not need to purchase an Irish dance costume or specialized equipment to participate in the 8-week homeschool program.
Do parents stay during class?
Classes are designed for dancers to participate independently with their instructor. Vanshaw Academy has a closed door policy to ensure classes can run without distractions.
If your child has additional needs that may affect their participation, please contact us before registering so we can discuss how we can best support them.
Can siblings participate together?
We love welcoming homeschool families! Siblings who fall within the appropriate age range may register for the same program.
Because Irish dance can be adapted for different abilities, dancers do not necessarily need to be at exactly the same skill level to enjoy the class together.
Is the program competitive?
The 8-week homeschool program is recreational and introductory. There is no requirement to compete.
Vanshaw Academy offers additional recreational and competitive opportunities for dancers who decide they would like to continue with Irish dance.
Are we committing to a full dance season?
No! Your registration is for one 8-week session.
The program is designed to give homeschool families the opportunity to try Irish dance without committing to a full September-to-June dance season.
What happens after the 8 weeks?
There is no obligation to continue after your session ends.
Dancers who love Irish dance can register for another available session or explore our regular Vanshaw Academy programs. We’ll be happy to recommend the best next step based on your dancer’s age, experience and interests.
Can I receive a receipt for homeschool funding?
Yes. We can provide a receipt for your registration.
Homeschool funding and reimbursement requirements vary between programs and providers, so families should confirm eligibility directly with their homeschool program before registering.
What if my child is nervous about trying something new?
That’s completely okay! Our introductory programs are specifically designed for dancers who are new to Irish dance.
We focus on creating a welcoming environment where dancers can learn at their own pace, build confidence and have fun while trying something new.
How do I register?
Registration is completed online and space is limited for each 8-week session.
